Critique of Ontological Militarism

Abstract War metaphors permeate the world we live in. From wildlife documentaries (natural war) to curbing of academic freedom (war on woke), it seems that anything can be described in an essential likeness warfare. Drawing Lacanian psychoanalysis, this paper investigates ubiquity war critiques violence within Critical Security Studies and International Political Sociology. The analysis focuses three concepts recently advanced as alternatives shortcomings securitization theory its reliance a mythological idea liberal peace: fighting, martial politics, struggles. how each these is built relation explains revealing underlying symptom, form ontological militarism, which cannot properly work through. It advances concept militarism attribution heuristic privilege turning into cypher all social relations by investment assumed indistinction between war/peace war/struggle. invites civility Relations (IR) take seriously point whereby resort becomes symptom inability escape symbolic horizons violent militaristic order.
